Entering Mauritania with a Car or Motorbike

Correct as of: (date last confirmed correct)

Required Paperwork

Mauretania recognises the carnet de passage but usually do not use it. Instead they will write a lessé passé for you. So you will need your original car registration papers and pasport, in the same name.

Process at border

(To check if you need a travel Visa for Mauritania, application instructions and fees see: Mauritania Visa online application at VisaHQ.com)
The main Mauretanian border is a bit confusing. You arive at the militairy checkpost after de few horible km nomans land from Marok. The militairy guys wil check your car after which you are allowed to continue onwards. After 100 m or so there is a building on the right where you have to get your car papers arranged. Its hard to find the right office and person but the office to have is ground floor in the back. After paying for your papers (15€ i think) you continue again 100 m to get to the small imigration office at the left. Having your stamp you can buy insurance 50 m further on on the left. There is a lot of hassle on this border, it will be easier and quicker if you take one of the many fixers, but discuss the price in advance and no more then 5 to 10€. It wil save you also many of the tauts who will demand presents

Cost of entry

You will have to pay about 15€ for your car permit. You can pay in Euro, Dollar and Mauretanian ougya

Exiting with a vehicle

If you cross into Sengal never take the Rosso border, always Diema. Exiting is painles, except for the fact that every office demands 5€ for their work. So police, customs and immigration all want their share. Other then that its straightforward, getting you car signed out and your pasport stamped. Be aware that 20 k before the border there's a national park guy who wants money and just before entering Senegal you have to cross a small bridge. The bridgekeeper wants his money as well but wil try to overcharge you. .

A fiche de police is merely a piece of paper with on it your name, pasport details, car details, profession, and where you are heading. Copy it 20 times and your done.
