This is the document from the country where the vehicle is registered and is commonly the legal proof of ownership.
It will usually contain information like:

  • Name and address of the owner.
  • License (number) plate.
  • Vehicle make.
  • Vehicle model.
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • Year of manufacture.
  • Color.

The original of this document is almost always required to cross a border. Translations are not required.

In some countries (most notably the USA) the proof of ownership (title) is a separate document to the Registration. To make sure you don't have any border problems, bring both documents.

For travel to some countries — several on the overland Europe-India route for example — you will require a carnet de passage, sort of a passport for your car. Like the International driver's license, these are normally obtained from the automobile club in your home country.
