The Carabinieri (State Police) control non-European vehicles:
- The compliance of snow tires, with speed and load
- The bicycle registration plate for the rear luggage rack (Cartello Carichi Sporgenti Omologato)
- The presence of the oval sticker of the country code stuck to the vehicle

Free entry, but highways have tolls.
Permitted length of stay
A foreign registered vehicle can stay up to 6 months in any country within EU.
EU includes: Austria, Italy, Belgium, Latvia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Croatia, Luxembourg, Cyprus Malta, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, Estonia, Portugal, Finland, Romania, France, Slovakia, Germany, Slovenia, Greece, Spain, Hungary, Sweden & Ireland
However, you must pay extra attention and study carefully your stay in the Schengen Zone which allows only 3 months every 6 months per year.
The Schengen Member States include: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland & Liechtenstein. For example Switzerland, Norway or Liechtenstein belong to the Schengen Zone (which literally means free movement) but in the EU. Also countries like Serbia, Albania, FYROM, Bosnia or Belarus do not belong to any group (EU or Schengen Zone)
Extension of stay

Storing a vehicle and temporarily leaving the country
As there is no stamp of the car on your passport you should be able to temporarily leave (if you intend to leave the country while your bike is stored ask while entering in Italy-EU and update here with fresh news) . You are able to store your vehicle in a motorcycle storage as long as your motorbike can stay in EU so: -As long as your temporary permit for extra EU vehicles -Freedom of visit and stay for every european registered vehicle.
Nearby Milano airport you can find mototouring storage, I went there to visit and they had a little bit less than 100 motorbikes, plus other vehicles from all around the world, they are easygoing helpful and speak good english.

Vehicle insurance requirements
Vehicle insurance is mandatory for all vehicles. Any 3rd party insurance is acceptable according to the law. You can buy online through the web or from an agent.
The famous Green Card goes automatically (and free of charge) with the national/regional insurance but the vehicle must be registered in EU and the driver needs to have an EU driving license. Just ask it from your agent.
EU insurance companies will only handle clients that are residents/ citizens of EU and have an EU license to drive/ ride within the EU territory.
For foreign registered vehicles you will need what in Europe is called Temporary Frontier Insurance. An easy way to get it in 2/3 days and online before entering italy is trougth this website: -greencard website- .The service is offered by a well established Italian tour company that will do all the paperwork and request for you. You can get free quotes and the insurance is valid in all EU countries.
