Countries fall into a few categories with regards to insurance requirements:

  • Nothing Required: The country has no insurance requirements, and presumably you are on your own if you are involved in an accident.
  • Mandatory to purchase: You will be forced to buy some form of local insurance in the country (usually at the border), irrelevant of any other insurance you may have.
  • Covered by International insurance: You can use International insurance you may have.

NOTE: Some Overlanders prefer to purchase International insurance before leaving home - this is often extremely expensive and cost prohibitive, so many people give it a miss. The only company that seems to offer such a policy is Clements Worldwide who provide international cover:

CONTINENT SPECIFIC: Majority of the African countries are covered by two consortiums, namely, Ecowas Brown Card and the Comesa Yellow Card.
