Senegal has a few strange rules. Cars older then 8 years (use to be 5) are not allowed to enter Senegal. If you have a [[Carnet de Passage]] you might get a special permission. It depends on the day and the custom officer. Last time I was there (2012) they allowed me 3 days. If I wanted to stay longer I had to go to Dakar main custom office to get it extended. <Br />
+
Rules about the age of a vehicle DO NOT apply to temporary permits for tourists.
If you don't have a [[Carnet de Passage]] bu still want to pass through you have to buy an expensive paper for a few hundred dollars, after which they will allow you to pass through in 48 or 72 hours. <br />
+
Besides this you need your original [[Vehicle registration]], in the same name as your passport.

* Get yourself stamped in at immigration.
I will try and keep this simple. Everyone attempting this can do the Math's and work it out for yourselves. Please take into account no camping in Dakar, distance from the border, driving there yourself and finding parking, taking a Taxi/Bus from St Louis or nearer etc etc..
+
* Go to Duane to get a temporary import for the vehicle. Using the [[vehicle registration]] the officer will write out a Passavant, valid for 48 hours only.
I will give 2 options..you can alter these to suit your individual Needs/ Preferences.
+
* If you have a [[Carnet de Passage]], you will also only be given 48 hours.
* Arrive at Diama and pay 2500CFA for a Passavant which will give you 48hrs to go to the Head Office of the Douane in Dakar to get an extension. This costs you nothing.
+

* Arrive at Diama and pay 200 euro and get 5 days via a "Tourist Expert" which the Boss of the Douane will ring giving him your details. He arrives and attaches a letter to the 5 day Passavant saying you are on a rally. 5 days latter he does the same again giving you 5-7 days depending on when the paperwork is done. (They don't include weekends)
+
See Extension of Stay immediately below for information about extending the 48 hours.
We just had the most bizarre day in the offices of the Douane in Dakar.
+
We went to get more days to stay in Senegal.. After taking a number to show we was in a queue (Which is rubbish, no one outside the UK queue's!!) we were summoned to an office. The guy was stern, as they usually are and went away to speak to someone..we was not hopeful at this point.
+
Next thing he was friendly and said we had to see the Big Boss!!! We had not seen this happen with everyone else.
+
So, fearing the worse we followed him. As we entered the Boss's office he was lounging on one of the leather sofa's with a Flat screen TV all very posh..
+
Turned out he was just interested in us and wanted a chat..we think he was bored and a English guy with a German wife turning up was a highlight!!!
+
We played the game "Senegal is fantastic..The food is great...we want to see more National Parks!!"
+
He practiced his German and English..asked us how many days we wanted?? And was surprised we said only 10!!!
+
Nothing was checked..no passports..no paperwork etc.. He signed our pas savant all for free and off
+
we went to enjoy a beer!!!

If you need to extend your car papers you will have to visit one of the main custom offices. Its a tedious process and you are at the mercy of the custom official. There is an office in st. Louis, (if you cross the bridge its on the left, but due to one way traffic you have to drive round), but the main office is in Dakar, at the main gate of the port.  St Louis officials might refer you to Dakar, which will cost you a lot of time getting there and back. All in all its not a tourist friendly process.
+
To extend this 48 hours, you can go to Duane in Sant Louis, but they are known to be very corrupt and will demand hundreds of Euros to do so. DO NOT GO THERE!

Senegal is a spectacular country that many Overlanders fall in love with. Many people feel the Cassamance area, South of Gambia, feels like a different country as is well worth a visit for some quality beach time.

Entering Senegal with a Car or Motorbike

Correct as of: July 2016

Required Paperwork

(To check if you need a travel Visa for Senegal, application instructions and fees see: Senegal Visa online application at VisaHQ.com)

(no copies are required)

Rules about the age of a vehicle DO NOT apply to temporary permits for tourists.

Process at border

  • Get yourself stamped in at immigration.
  • Go to Duane to get a temporary import for the vehicle. Using the vehicle registration the officer will write out a Passavant, valid for 48 hours only.
  • If you have a Carnet de Passage, you will also only be given 48 hours.

See Extension of Stay immediately below for information about extending the 48 hours.

Cost of entry

  • Passavant costs Error in price tag: The cost attribute must be specified, The currency attribute must be specified., and an official receipt will be stapled to the Passavant.

Customs, police and immigration are increasingly demanding unofficial fees for stamp, permits and inspection. Not big amounts, perhaps FCFA2,000.00 XAF here and there. Its annoying and illegal, refuse to pay anything more than the Passavant fee.

Permitted length of stay

Starts at 48 hours, can be extended twice for two weeks each time, for a total of just over four weeks.

Enter the door between “AXA” and Senegal Tours, go up the stairs to the 4th floor, and start asking for “Passavant” - even with basic French I had no problem getting it extended for 2 weeks completely free. When that two weeks expires you can get it extended for 2 more without problem, but not more than that.

The process is very simple and free in Dakar.

Storing a vehicle and temporarily leaving the country

Unknown, likely possible if using a Carnet de Passage

Exiting with a vehicle

  • Hand in your Passavant to Duane.
  • Get yourself stamped out at immigration.

All should be free, do not pay for this.
